Hardin, Guerra Retain Seats in District 13

PEMBROKE, NC -- Lumbee election officials say a recount has confirmed that James Hardin and Traci Locklear Guerra remain the victors in the race for two seats to represent District 13.

The executive committee of the Lumbee Self-Determination Commission certified the results in District 13 during a conference call with the elections board Wednesday night. The commission had certified the results for tribal chairman and 17 other districts on Saturday (Dec. 2).

Challenger Ronnie Clayton Locklear, saying he had lost votes between the time they were counted in Cumberland County and posted in Robeson County, had requested the recount. But Leroy Freeman, chairman of the elections board, said Locklear only gained one vote in Monday's recount. In the original count, Locklear received 87 votes, Hardin had 161 votes, and Guerra had 101.

District 13 includes Cumberland, Pender, Brunswick, Bladen and New Hanover counties.

The tribal chairman and representatives are scheduled to be sworn in on Dec. 13 at the Southeastern Regional Agricultural Center/ Farmers Market.
