Faction Lumbee Group Drops Appeal
PEMBROKE, NC -- The Lumbee Tribe of Cheraw Indians announced on Monday that it is dropping its appeal of a lawsuit against the Lumbee Regional Development Association.
The decision removes a hurdle that could have stopped a new government from being created next month for the Lumbee Indian tribe.
Jerry McNeill of the Cheraw organization said the Tribal Council will dissolve after the election.
Now that the appeal has been dropped, Judge Howard Manning of Raleigh is free to lift a requirement that next month’s tribal government election have at least 30 percent participation from the Lumbee Tribe.
