Drum Contest Information

**** UPDATE: Congratulations to our Head Lady Dancer, Marion Elizabeth James, (pictured above) who won the Congeniality Award during the Miss Indian World competition at the 18th Gathering of Nations powwow in Albuquerque, NM this past weekend! ****

The Annual Craven County Intertribal Powwow will be held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 4-6, 2001 at the Craven County Fairground located three miles east of New Bern, NC on Highway 70 East. The fairground is on the left (east) side of Hwy. 70 going from New Bern. Watch for roadside signs and banners.

The powwow is non-competition for dancers with day money awarded each of the three days to ALL registered dancers. Dancers will register only once to be eligible for day money all three days. No registration fee.

A drum contest with $500 awarded to 1st-Place, $300 to 2nd-Place, and $200 to 3rd-Place will be held in two rounds. Round 1 will be held Saturday night and Round 2 will be Sunday afternoon. Drum registration closes at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. No drum registration fee. Contest must have three registered drums to be held. Host Drum will not compete.

Dancers and drums from all Native American tribes and nations are welcome and invited to attend. The public is invited and welcomed.

All registered dancers and drum singers will be fed supper each day.

Grand Entries: Friday - 6:00 p.m. Saturday - 12:00 noon & 6:00 p.m. Sunday - 12:00 noon.

Host Drum: Eastern Bull Singers, MC: John Jefferies (Occaneechi), Head Man Dancer: DeVane Burnette, Sr. (Coharie), Head Lady Dancer: Marion James (Lumbee), Arena Director: Tyrone Grayhorse (Tuscarora), Powwow Director: Deborah Wayne (Lenape).

Food concessions by Oxendine Catering. Craft Vendors by invitation only.

Participants and guests may camp free at the fairground where water, electricity, and inside toilets are available. There are no showers.

General Public admission is $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for Seniors(65+) and Students (5 to 17). Children under age 5 are admitted free.

THE EVENT WILL BE HELD RAIN OR SHINE. Indoor facilities are available at the fairground in case of inclement weather.
